Role: Senior EC&I Engineer

Salary: £45-£59k (Depending on Experience)
Job Description
Suitable candidates will design, support installation & maintenance, and troubleshoot a wide range of automatic door and access systems.
These systems range from pedestrian automatic doors and oversized industrial door systems to safety-critical doorsets used within nuclear, defence, transport, and high-hazard facilities.
The role requires working with motors, gearboxes, clutch/brake mechanisms, sensors, safety devices, VSDs, PLCs, and programmable safety systems. Candidates must understand the Machinery Directive and UK Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations, ensuring systems meet required Performance Levels (PL) or SIL ratings. The role acts as the focal point for EC&I design activities, working collaboratively with Mechanical Engineers, project teams, subcontractors, and external stakeholders.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Multi-departmental integration to determine project scope and assist with Functional Design Specifications.
• Conduct site visits to assess existing systems and verify modification requirements
• Detailed design of control systems including wiring schematics, panel assemblies, and cable schedules
• Use of SISTEMA for analysing and verifying Performance Levels (PL) of SRP/CS.
• Production of EC&I drawings, documentation, and calculations.
• Support site teams with fault diagnosis.
• Support the checking and technical verification of EC&I drawings, schematics, and documentation produced by other engineers if required.
• Ensure compliance with relevant electrical and safety standards.
• Checking & approval responsibilities in accordance with company processes.
• Contribute to NCR resolution and raise NCRs where required.
• Liaise with both internal and external customers.
• Any other ad hoc duties as may be required, and as commensurate with the grade of post.
• Flexibility to work overtime to achieve project plan as required.
• Contribute to wider team knowledge transfer, continuous improvements and innovative design.
Qualifications, knowledge, Experience
Essential
• Knowledge of the UK Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 and Machinery Directive principles as applied to automated moving equipment.
• Qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline (NVQ Level 3, HNC/HND, or equivalent)
• Proven experience working with automated doors, access systems, or similar electrical/mechanical systems
• Strong understanding of electrical systems, control circuits, and fault-finding
• Familiarity with relevant standards (e.g., BS EN 16005 for pedestrian doors, BS EN 12453, BS ISO 13849-1, BS ISO 13849-2, BS EN 60204, BS EN 7671)
• Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and schematics
• Suitable experience using 2D and 3D CAD software packages (preferably AutoCAD 2D/ Inventor 3D).
• Ability to reliably design compliant EC&I systems unaided.
• Production of EC&I drawings and documentation; ability to write reports and specifications.
• Generation of hand and software-based calculations.
• Understanding of PLC software packages would be advantageous.
• Sound motivational skills with a focus on quality adherence and output.
Desirable
• Experience with automated door systems such as roller shutters, sectional doors, industrial sliding doors, or other powered access systems.
• ECS/CSCS card
• SC Clearance or eligibility to obtain
• Experience with safety-critical access systems in nuclear, defence, or heavy industry.
• Knowledge of standards such as BS EN 16005, BS EN 12453, BS EN ISO 13849, BS EN 60204.
• Experience using SISTEMA for PL calculations.
• Understanding of VFDs, safety PLCs, interlock systems, and emergency release mechanisms.
