Permit & Certifications Lead

Location: Southam, Warwickshire
Job Type: Permanent, Full Time
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Salary: Circa £50,000 per annum


Role Summary


We are seeking an experienced and proactive Permit & Certifications Lead to manage environmental permitting, compliance systems, certifications, and quality assurance activities across a growing engineering and manufacturing operation.

This role will be responsible for ensuring the business maintains all relevant environmental permits, ISO certifications, and compliance requirements associated with manufacturing operations, including battery, high-voltage (HV), and waste management activities. Working closely with Operations, Engineering, HSE, Quality, and Senior Leadership teams, the successful candidate will drive compliance excellence, support business growth, and ensure the organisation maintains the highest standards of quality, environmental performance, information security, and occupational health and safety.

This is a key strategic role responsible for maintaining regulatory compliance, managing external audits, supporting customer requirements, and embedding continuous improvement across the organisation.


Key Responsibilities


Permitting & Regulatory Compliance

  • Lead the preparation, submission, maintenance, and modification of environmental permit applications.

  • Act as the primary point of contact with regulatory bodies, including the Environment Agency and local authorities.

  • Monitor changes in environmental legislation and ensure business compliance with all applicable regulations.

  • Develop and maintain compliance registers, permit conditions, and monitoring programmes.

  • Ensure all site activities operate within permit requirements and environmental controls.

  • Support expansion projects and facility developments by securing necessary permits and regulatory approvals.

  • Coordinate environmental reporting and regulatory submissions as required.


Waste Management & Environmental Compliance

  • Manage waste compliance activities across manufacturing, recycling, and operational facilities.

  • Provide technical expertise on waste classification, storage, handling, transportation, and disposal requirements.

  • Ensure waste streams are fully documented and compliant with relevant legislation.

  • Support the development of sustainable waste reduction and resource recovery strategies.

  • Conduct waste audits and identify opportunities for cost reduction and environmental improvement.

  • Manage relationships with waste contractors, service providers, and regulatory stakeholders.


ISO Management Systems

  • Maintain and continuously improve the company's integrated management systems.

  • Lead certification activities for:

    • ISO 9001 – Quality Management

    • ISO 14001 – Environmental Management

    • ISO 45001 – Occupational Health & Safety

    • ISO 27001 – Information Security Management

  • Manage external certification bodies and surveillance audits.

  • Coordinate internal audit programmes and management reviews.

  • Ensure corrective and preventive actions are effectively implemented and closed out.

  • Support departments in developing procedures, process controls, and compliance documentation.


Quality & Continuous Improvement

  • Lead quality assurance initiatives across engineering and manufacturing operations.

  • Monitor key performance indicators relating to quality, compliance, environmental      performance, and safety.

  • Support root cause investigations and corrective action activities.

  • Drive continuous improvement programmes throughout the business.

  • Facilitate process mapping, standardisation, and risk management activities.

  • Support customer audits and supplier quality assessments when required.


Engineering & Manufacturing Support

  • Work closely with engineering and manufacturing teams to ensure compliance requirements are integrated into manufacturing processes.

  • Support new product introduction (NPI) activities from a compliance and regulatory perspective.

  • Provide guidance on battery handling, storage, transportation, and end-of-life management requirements.

  • Support compliance activities associated with high-voltage battery systems and manufacturing operations.

  • Assist in facility, equipment, and process validation programmes where required.

  • Ensure production operations align with environmental and quality management system requirements.


Leadership & Stakeholder Management

  • Provide compliance and regulatory guidance to managers and employees across the business.

  • Deliver training and awareness programmes relating to permits, certifications, quality, environmental, and HSE requirements.

  • Support business strategy by providing regulatory and compliance advice on future operational developments.

  • Prepare reports and presentations for Senior Leadership and external stakeholders.

  • Promote a culture of compliance, quality, safety, and continuous improvement throughout the organisation.


Skills & Experience Required


  • Significant experience managing environmental permits and regulatory compliance within an engineering, manufacturing, waste management, recycling, or industrial environment.

  • Thorough understanding of waste streams, waste classification, and waste permitting processes.

  • Strong working knowledge of environmental legislation and compliance requirements.

  • Proven experience managing and maintaining ISO management systems.

  • Extensive knowledge of:

    • ISO 9001

    • ISO 14001

    • ISO 45001

    • ISO 27001

  • Experience leading external certification audits and regulatory inspections.

  • Strong quality management and quality assurance experience.

  • Experience conducting internal audits and managing corrective actions.

  • Excellent organisational and project management skills.

  • Ability to interpret regulations and translate requirements into practical business processes.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.

  • Competent in developing policies, procedures, compliance documentation, and reports.
