Role: Senior Project Manager
Location: Bolton, Greater Manchester
Salary: £55-65k (Depending on Experience)
The Senior Project Manager is responsible for the successful delivery of complex, high-value or multiple concurrent projects/programmes, ensuring alignment with business objectives and maximising commercial performance.
This role holds full accountability for project P&L, risk management, stakeholder engagement, and overall delivery performance. The Senior Project Manager operates at both strategic and operational levels, acting as a key interface between the client, senior leadership, and delivery teams.
In addition to project execution, the Senior Project Manager contributes to business growth, supports bid and tender activities, drives continuous improvement, and provides leadership and mentoring to project management staff.
The role is client-facing and requires the ability to manage senior stakeholder relationships, resolve complex issues, and ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
Responsibilities & Duties:
Project & Programme Leadership
Lead the delivery of complex, high-risk, or multi-million-pound projects and/or programmes from order receipt through to completion and installation
Provide strategic leadership across cross-functional project teams to ensure successful delivery of project objectives
Oversee multiple projects where required, ensuring alignment with business priorities and resource optimisation
Act as the primary escalation point for major project issues and risks
Commercial & Financial Management
Full accountability for P&L across assigned projects or programme portfolio
Drive margin improvement, cost control, and financial forecasting (including Cost to Complete)
Lead commercial negotiations with clients and subcontractors
Identify and manage commercial risks and opportunities to optimise business outcomes
Stakeholder & Client Management
Develop and maintain strong relationships with senior client stakeholders, acting as a trusted advisor
Ensure client requirements are clearly understood and consistently delivered
Provide executive-level reporting to clients and internal senior leadership
Manage stakeholder expectations and resolve conflicts effectively
Governance, Risk & Compliance
Establish and maintain robust project governance structures
Ensure compliance with NEC contract requirements, internal procedures, and regulatory standards
Identify, assess, and manage project risks (commercial, technical, and delivery-related)
Lead change management processes across projects
Planning, Delivery & Execution
Ensure effective planning using appropriate tools (e.g., MS Project, Primavera P6)
Oversee Work Breakdown Structures, work packages, and resource planning
Coordinate cross-functional teams including engineering, procurement, SHEQ, and commercial
Ensure projects meet targets for cost, quality, delivery, and safety
Leadership & People Management
Lead, mentor, and develop Project Managers and project team members
Build high-performing, collaborative project teams
Provide direction, performance management, and coaching to direct reports
Promote a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and excellence
Business Improvement & Strategy
Contribute to departmental and organisational strategy
Lead or support strategic initiatives to improve project delivery performance
Identify opportunities to enhance processes, tools, and methodologies
Support bid and tender processes, including risk reviews and commercial input
Operational Excellence
Ensure accurate and timely project reporting in line with contractual and internal requirements
Maintain auditable project documentation and records
Support audits, reviews, and governance processes
Ensure adherence to Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality (HSEQ) standards
Additional Responsibilities
Support departmental targets and business objectives
Be adaptable to client processes and environments
Undertake national and international travel as required
Carry out any other duties commensurate with the seniority of the role
Qualifications, Knowledge, Experience & Skills:
Essential
Formal Project Management qualification (e.g., APM, PMI or equivalent)
Degree or HND in Mechanical/Production Engineering, Construction, or related discipline
Significant experience managing complex, high-value or multiple concurrent projects/programmes
Proven experience with NEC contracts (NEC3/NEC4 or similar)
Strong commercial acumen with demonstrated P&L responsibility
Experience leading project teams and managing people
Proven ability to influence senior stakeholders and deliver executive-level reporting
Strong knowledge of project management methodologies, tools, and best practices
Experience in risk, change, and stakeholder management
